fossil fuels are sources of chemical potential energy.

energy is stored or held in the compounds that make up the fossil fuels.

fossil fuels include: petroleum, natural gas and coal.

fossil fuels contain hydrogen and carbon as the major elements in the compounds.  They may also contain sulfur and nitrogen as well.
